Anxiety in Children and Young Teens

Every child is faced with challenging situations that can lead to or trigger anxiety. Anxiety often looks different in children than in adults because children do not have the same coping and expression skills many adults have learned. The anxiety may be expressed by crying, tantrums, avoidance behaviors, complaint of physical problems or pain, etc. Helping children with anxiety involves teaching skills, new ways of thinking and new ways of coping. There are various types of anxiety disorders that are seen in both children and adults. To be classified as a disorder, the fear is intense and persistent and interferes significantly with daily life.
